Richard B. Usher Honored With ASA President’s Award

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The American Subcontractors Association (ASA) honored Richard B. Usher, principal of Hill & Usher LLC, Phoenix, Ariz., with the ASA President’s Award for Excellence. 2007-08 ASA President David H. Bradbury, Precision Concrete Construction Inc., Alpharetta, Ga., recognized Usher during ASA’s annual business meeting, held March 7 in conjunction with the ASA Business Forum and Convention 2008 in Charleston, S.C. Chosen by the association’s president, the President’s Award is presented to the individual who most supports the ASA president during his or her term.

Every year, the ASA president gets the chance to recognize the one individual who has contributed the most during his or her tenure as president. While this responsibility initially seemed rather daunting, after some serious thought I came to realize just how easy the decision really was, said Bradbury. Richard has served as a mentor to me at every stage of my leadership experience in ASA. Beginning with my earliest involvement in ASA at the national level, he was always there for me, both coaching me and leading by example.

A leader in the Phoenix construction market, Usher served as president of ASA of Arizona in 1989 and successfully advocated for numerous subcontractor-friendly laws in the state of Arizona, including the revolutionary Private Prompt Payment Legislation in 2000. At the national level, Usher has served on and chaired numerous key committees for the association, and was the primary mover behind ASA’s opposition to the proliferation of risk transfer mechanisms in construction. He currently serves on ASA’s board of directors.

Each time I participate in one of his workshops, listen to one of his presentations, or meet with him to discuss an issue, I come away knowing more and feeling better prepared for the future, said Bradbury. ASA is consistently strengthened by his knowledge and experience, and I truly consider myself lucky to be able to call him my friend.

Founded in 1966, ASA amplifies the voice of, and leads, trade contractors to improve the business environment for the construction industry and to serve as a steward for the community. ASA’s vision is to be the united voice dedicated to improving the business environment in the construction industry. The ideals and beliefs of ASA are ethical and equitable business practices, quality construction, a safe and healthy work environment, and integrity and membership diversity.
